- Interview Q&A
Q: In your words, what is fashion?
A: Personally, I view fashion as a window to the soul, an outlet for self expression, creativity and individuality, a method of communicating who I am, my inspirations, and my intentions. It is an avenue for fun, play, and spontenaity. Fashion the freedom to materialize what is on the inside; fashion is art.
Q: What attracts you to the fashion industry?
A: What sparks my interest, is that such a developed industry, still has so much space for creation, expansion, and revitalization. I see a huge opportunity for growth in which possibilities are vast. Being as influential of an industry as fashion is, in a world that would immensely benefit from a global consciousness shift, it sits in a seat of great potential for spearheading the movement. When I dress in clothing that I feel confident, comfortable, and powerful in, especially when it was made with humanitarian and ecologically conscious standards, by people who love the process of creating amazing artwork, I come alive. I believe that when we apply this concept to the creation, production, marketing, and sales of fashion products in general, we will see a massive increase in human empowerment, and therefor, a shift in global consciousness. This movement will also greatly increase the fashion industry's market.
Q: What area of fashion is your main focus?
A: Eco-Chic. Being a fashionista myself, I have found that I would like to support the green movement, but more often than not, it has been a challenge to find chic, fashionable clothing that is also eco-friendly. This is a niche of the industry that is underdeveloped. I believe that when we use quality eco-friendly materials, and or recycle vintage materials to create high fashion, comfortable, stylish, well made pieces, while marketing them effectively to the consumers, a huge movement will be underway.
Q: What are the key determining elements to your fashion?
A: Confidence, comfort, originality, timelessness, always determined by how I feel and my intention. When deciding what to wear, I take a minute to become introverted, and feel what my vibe is. Some questions I ask myself are: How do I feel? What would I like to communicate? What is my intention? Do I feel empowered, alive, and authentic? My priority when it comes to curating my outfit, is fun; I play dress up like a 10 year old in my mother's closet, with a little more taste and direction.
Q: How do you feel about trends? Do you follow them?
A: Personally, I prefer for my style to reflect my unique personality, however, trends can be a refreshing way to experience another time period. I am definitely not the type who wears something simply because it is "the thing to wear"; when I follow trends too closely, I feel like a clone or a robot. I do occasionally enjoy getting quirky inspiration from them.
Q: How do you go about creating your wardrobe?
A: I like to create my wardrobe with a few categories in mind: basics, statement & quirky pieces, and classic, timeless pieces while considering comfort, color, and fit. Generally speaking, I prefer quality over quantity. Regarding basics, I buy quality and am more pricing conscious, because I will wear them all of the time, and they will therefor become worn out more quickly. I invest the largest amount of money into my classic, timeless pieces seeing as they will always be stylish, I would like to make them last, which means quality and extra care. When it comes to quirky & statement pieces, this is generally the area where I will spend the least amount of money, while still maintaining the quality appearance, because they go in and out of style so quickly and you can find great statement pieces at inexpensive prices. Because of how infrequently they are worn, they tend to take a while to wear out.
Q: Do you have any fashion advice for aspiring fashionistas?
A: Dress for yourself. If you are dressing for someone else, chances are, it will appear that you are trying too hard. Wear stuff that suits who you are, makes you feel amazing, and accentuates your frame & body. Only buy something if you LOVE it; there is no need to invest in "maybe" pieces. You will never wear them. Wear clothing that empowers you and rock it like there's no tomorrow. Some key questions to ask yourself: Am I comfortable? Confident? Does it make sense for my body/personality? How do I feel in it?
Q: Do you have any final words to summarize the interview with?
A: Confidence, self-love, and radiance are what inspire people; all of these come from within, however there is a direct correlation between how we present ourselves, what we wear, and how we feel, so wear what makes you thrive and wear it like star that you are.
